Prison Fellowship Nigeria, a Christian organization, has called on the federal and state governments to update the infrastructure at the country’s numerous correctional institutions, as well as enhance the system’s budget, in accordance with UN guidelines.
This, it added, would guarantee that the facilities are capable of rehabilitating and reforming convicts.
Chief Olaide Adelami, the fellowship’s 2nd Vice Chairman, made the appeal while interacting with media during the fellowship’s 2021 Annual General Meeting in Odo-Uro, Iyin Ekiti.
Adelami noted that the terrible quality of facilities in most Nigerian prisons, along with poor treatment, had resulted in the death of many inmates.
According to him, the fellowship has continued to reach out to prisoners to expose them to the word of God and also reconcile them with the offended persons whose case brought them to prison.
Also the Executive Director, Prison Fellowship Nigeria, Mr. Benson Iwagu appealed to Nigerians to always show love and extend hands of fellowship to prisoners.
In his remark, the Comptroller, Correctional Service, Ekiti State, Mr Joseph Ojo acknowledged the efforts of the fellowship at reforming prisoners, urging them to sustain the good work
In an interview, the chairman of the occasion, Dr. Olusoji Solomon called on members of the fellowship to always operate in line with the directive of God and lead by example.
Earlier, the chairman, Prison Fellowship Nigeria, Ekiti State Chapter, Deacon Gabriel Tope Daramola said the meeting was to brainstorm on their activities and reach concrete resolutions on how best to carry out the assignment of reforming prisoners.
