- Workers at the Imo State Secretariat were very joyful on Friday, December 24, when they received their 13th month salary, as promised by Governor Hope Uzodimma.
Hundreds of the excited workers congratulated one another with hugs as notification of the payment began to arrive on their phones on Wednesday and continued until Friday, with many of them describing Governor Uzodimma as a miracle worker.
During a meeting with workers on Tuesday, December 21, Governor Uzodimma promised to pay them 100% of their basic salary as 13th pay, the first such intervention in Imo State’s history.
Despite the fact that Friday was supposed to be a half-day workday for civil servants, many of them stayed late to continue discussing the positive development.
Mrs Olivia Ejirimka, who works for the Owerri Municipal Area Council, for example, said it was the first time she had seen the 13th month payment since she began working many years ago.
“My brother, when the Governor made that promise, my attitude was like let’s wait and see. Now that he has fulfilled it, help me thank him, “she said.
Mr Ezekiel Chukwuka of the Ministry of Finance, on the other hand, called the 13th month salary payment “the greatest miracle of 2021.”
“what the workers were praying for was to get our December salaries, not knowing that our action Governor had another surprise for us.”, Chukwuka says.
While praising Governor Uzodimma for his generosity, Mr. Chukwuka argued that it should be a yearly event.
Mrs Oby Amadi-Obi, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information and Strategy, also praised Governor Uzodimma for being a caring father to the state’s workers.
She recalled that shortly after taking office, the governor began renovating the Imo State Secretariat and, without wasting time, began providing free transportation to junior employees.
Mrs. Amadi-Obi called the payment of the 13th month salary “the icing on the cake of the Governor’s good package for the staff.”
When the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) paid Governor Uzodimma a thank you visit in his office on Thursday, they expressed gratitude for him honoring his promise to pay the workers’ 13th month salary.
During the visit, the chairman of the NLC in the state, Comrade Philips Nwansi, told the governor that the 13th month payment was the first in Imo State’s history.
