Joe Biden Has Chosen Lloyd Austin As Defence Secretary, The First Black Man To Hold The Office If Confirmed

United states president-elect, Joe Biden has picked a retired army general, Lloyd Austin as his defense secretary.

If Austin sail through his confirmation at the Senate, he will be the first Black man to hold the position.

It can be recalled that under the Obama administration, Mr Austin led US military operations in the Middle East as head of US Central Command.

Mr Austin has also served as a senior commander in Iraq and was the first Black vice chief of staff for the army, the service’s second highest ranking officer.

The administration was also reportedly considering other Obama alums for the role like Jeh Johnson, former secretary of homeland security, and Michèle Flournoy, who served as under secretary of defense for policy.

Austin was among three final contenders for the role. Michèle Flournoy, a veteran Pentagon official who served as under secretary of defense for policy in President Barack Obama’s administration, and Jeh Johnson, a former secretary of Homeland security, were also under consideration.
