#ENDSARS: IGP Bows To Pressure, Finally Disbands SARS In Nigeria

  • The Inspector-General of Police Mohammad Adamu has finally announced the immediate disbandment of the special anti-robbery squad (SARS).
  • His announcement is coming in the heat of nationwide protest calling for the disbandment of the anti-robbery squad.

The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) on Sunday, October 11, finally bowed to pressure as the Inspector General Mohammed Adamu disbanded the controversial police unit, Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

The disbandment, which was announced by the IGP during a nationwide address, is unarguably historical — a total validation of the massive #EndSARS protests by the Nigerian youths.

It would be recalled that since Thursday, October 8, the Nigeran youths have been taken to the streets to protest ceaseless police maiming, killing and grand extortion of the people profiled as criminal based on their look in Nigeria.

Social media has also been awash with #EndSars hashtag peaking globally as Nigerians continue to demonstrate their displeasure against pronounced police brutality nationwide.

5 things IGP said as he dissolves SARS amid nationwide protest (video, photo)

  • SARS dissolved across 36 states and FCT with immediate effect

The Inspector-General of Police has dissolved the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) across all the Thirty-Six (36) State Commands and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) with immediate effect.

  • Officers under SARS to be redeployed

IGP also said all the officers and men serving in the controversial SARS nit will be redeployed to other police commands, formations and units.

  • A new arrangement underway

IGP Adamu also stated that a new policing arrangement for tackling the offences of armed robbery and other violent crimes will be unveiled to the public soon.

  • Formation of Citizens and Strategic Stakeholders Forum

Speaking, IGP also said Citizens and Strategic Stakeholders Forum will be launched.

According to him, this will provide an avenue for citizens to regularly interface and advise the police authority on issues touching on the general public.

  • Investigative team on police brutality to be launched

The IGP also stated that to deal with the report of crimes committed against citizens, an Investigative Team will be constituted which will include Civil Society Organisations and culprits will be punished.
