EndSARS: 27 Victims Benefit As NHRC Panel Awards N147m Compensation For Police Brutality

On Thursday, the National Human Rights Commission awarded N147 million in damages to 27 victims of police brutality.
The panel is looking into human rights violations committed by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and other police units.

Mr Anthony Ojukwu, SAN, the Commission’s Executive Secretary, said in his opening speech that the #ENDSARS event was historic.

“By compensating the victims, the National Human Rights Commission is attempting to change the narrative of impunity.

“Where Nigerians’ rights are violated, the commission is ready to provide redress.”

“Where there is a violation, there must be a remedy,” he said, adding that “the commission has embarked on a journey to restore human dignity.”

However, Ojukwu argued that the promotion and protection of Nigerians’ rights required everyone’s cooperation.

He went on to say that this included the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government, as well as civil society organisations and the business community.
