BREAKING: OAU 200-level student falls inside soakaway, dies

• Miss Ajibola Ayomikun, a 200-level student at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife’s Department of Linguistics and African Languages, died after falling into a soakaway in BVER, one of the private hostels in the students’ village.

Abiodun Olarewaju, the University’s Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident to The punch news.

He expressed regret for the “unfortunate incident” on behalf of the university administration.

Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede, the Vice-Chancellor of OAU, was said to have led the varsity’s management team to the scene, sympathized with the students, and commiserated with the parents of the deceased, according to a subsequent statement.

Ogunbodede, who called the incident “tragic and unacceptable,” pledged to “critically examine the circumstances that led to the student’s death and administer appropriate punishment against to those involved or whoever is found culpable”.”

“When the news got to us, we immediately mobilised the emergency responders from the University, Osun State, and the OAU Teaching Hospital who through concerted efforts got the student out.

“She was immediately taken to the OAU Teaching Hospitals Complex where she was certified dead,” he said.
